Research Interests

My lab focuses on combining bioengineering , stem cell technologies and neuroscience to create complex models of the nervous system. We use these modelling platform to both discover new fundamental mechanisms in neurobiology, and to better understand the molecular chains of event that lead to neurodegeneration. Our interdisciplinary team focuses on a range of projects that span from answering fundamental questions in neurobiology to engineering the next generation of tools and platforms to model the nervous system in vitro. The biological questions we seek to answer focus the “engineering principles” of neurons, glia and complex circuitry, and we work to uncover new fundamental knowledge but also impact the lives of people with neurodegenerative disorders.

Most significant discovery

We developed and successfully applied several different novel modelling platforms and analysis techniques to answer key questions in neuroscience. Most notably, in 2022 we showed for the first time that axonal length in vitro is an important aspect of neuronal shape that influences drastically the overall metabolism of the neuron
